How to Play Super Mario Bros

Super Mario Bros starts in World 1-1 and progresses through eight worlds of four stages each. Use the arrow keys or A and D to move, then hold Shift or Ctrl while moving to sprint. Sprinting increases Mario's speed and is essential for clearing wider gaps, although releasing it before a crowded platform makes landing easier. Jump with the Up Arrow, W, or Space. A quick press produces a lower hop, while holding the key gives Mario more height. Stomp Goombas from above, but approach Koopa shells carefully because a kicked shell can travel across the stage and hit other enemies. Strike brick and question blocks from below to uncover coins and power-ups. A Super Mushroom makes small Mario grow and lets him survive one additional hit. Once Mario is powered up, a Fire Flower lets Shift or Ctrl launch fireballs. A Starman grants temporary protection, and a 1-Up Mushroom adds a life. Not every block is obvious, so investigate suspicious gaps in rows of bricks without spending too much of the stage timer. To enter a usable vertical pipe, stand near its center and press Down or S. Pipes may lead to bonus rooms or alternate sections, but some are scenery or contain Piranha Plants. Watch their movement before approaching. Underground, underwater, and castle stages change the hazards and rhythm: swimming requires repeated jump inputs, while castles demand careful timing around fire bars, lava, and Bowser. Reach the flagpole in outdoor stages and clear the bridge mechanism in castles to advance. Press P to pause and M to mute or restore game audio.
